in reply to: L5-S1 DISC HERNIATION, TWO BACK SURGERIES. #9947
Hello Dr, and Catmsdi, i am now 4 months post op from my fourth back surgery. The surgery consisted of rev. fusion and removal of the osteophyte. This problem affected my L5 nerve this time, the first 3 surgeries addressed issues with the S1 nerve. The nerve pain running form the back of my butt to foot is still there and at times worse then before. The only other option i was given was to do the rev. spinal cord stimulator trial. Because of the problems, poor results and uncomfortable feeling from the last trial i am opting out of this procedure. From what i have been told by the doctors there is nothing else that can be done. I don’t know if there is anything you have done for your patients in regards to this issue like this or am i at the end of the road. Thanks talk soon.
in reply to: L5-S1 DISC HERNIATION, TWO BACK SURGERIES. #9168Hello all, well Dr I saw my surgeon today and what you said is exactly what will be taking place. I will be going in for surgery to remove the Osteophyte that is blocking the neural foreman and conpressing the nerve. In order to do that he will need to remove the Harrington rod that’s connecting the pedicial screws, he will also be doing a good examination of all structures bones, nerves and instrumentation to make sure all is well. So another surgery here we go.

in reply to: L5-S1 DISC HERNIATION, TWO BACK SURGERIES. #9163You are dead on correct, the osteophyte is seen extending laterally into the right inferior neural foramen and seems to impinge upon the inferior aspect of the exiting right L5 nerve root. The right side is where the fusion and previous surgeries were preformed. I will be seeing the surgeon tomorrow and i am assuming that a surgical approach will be taken. So far there is no solid fusion and its been roughly 8 months now that is another concern of mine. the doctor used morcellized allograft bone and local allograft bone was used.
in reply to: L5-S1 DISC HERNIATION, TWO BACK SURGERIES. #9156Hey Doc, it’s been now 9 months since my L5 S1 fusion surgery. A quick recap I had 3 back surgeries total, laminectomy/ diskectomy on 6/26/12, another on 8/21/12, then fusion of that level 11/6/12. Problem occurred from a motor vehicle accident in 3/11/12. The fusion was preformed because of the third herniation and disk collapse/ instability. I have not been the same since the fusion lots of pain and issues with my back and leg. As the previous post will explain, since the fusion I have had 2 MRI’s one only a month after the fusion which show possible disk fragment impinging on the L5 nerve, but alot of scar tissue so the scan was deemed no good. I recently had another one done which stated a protruding disk at L5 S1 in the foramen at L5 impinging the L5 nerve. So the Dr decided to preform a Myelogram, the Myelogram shows a osteophyte in the L5 neural foramen impinging the L5 nerve. My question is how did this form and are the surgeries causing the body to respond to the stresses of these procedures in this manner?
in reply to: L5-S1 DISC HERNIATION, TWO BACK SURGERIES. #8221Hello everyone well its been 4 months and a few weeks since the last of 3 surgeries on my lumbar spine level L5-S1. It has not been a good road at all after the fusion surgery of this level on November 6, 2012. My back has not gotten any better its still very hard to get up out of bed and from sitting down. Movements are hard and painful as well the pain is becoming unbearable. I used to be able to walk a block without too many problems, but now its very painful and i have to sit down for 15-20 min to allow it to subside a-little. I was doing PT but a few weeks into PT i was doing half squats assisted with a pole and i sharp pain began to run across the front of my right thigh towards to medial side of my right leg down my calf and to the inner sole of my foot. On top of all that my left leg has on and off periods of radiculopathy. My doctor has asked me to do acupuncture but i do not feel that is the answer. I do feel however that there is something not right in my back which is causing me these issues. I looked to another doctor for a second opinion but so far no doctor will see me, all of them state you have had 3 back surgeries and you should remain with that doctor. I am at my wits end and don’t know what to do. Should i be feeling like this still, is this normal or is my body telling me something is def. wrong?
