    Hi again Dr. Corenman:

I had asked you previously if the right hip pain I am experiencing after fusion at L5,S1 is from Femoral Nerve compression or a separate hip problem; I have some new info.

I used a back brace to ambulate for 6 years prior to my surgery. I usually wore it unattached around my hips which gave me enough support to walk and do what I needed to do.

After the surgery, I did lot of walking on pavement without the brace until the right outer hip flared up; I do have a bit of groin pain as well.

Long story short, I didn’t want to put the brace on again so I purchased a “sacro belt” that goes around hips as an elastic band.

When I wear the sacro belt I can walk with limited right, outer, hip pain. The left hip is fine.

1.) Do you have any idea why this is ?

2.) I am 4.5 months out of surgery. Will wearing sacro belt screw anything up with fusion process ?

    Thank you!

Hip pain can be generated by the hip and not referred from the lumbar spine. You might have either a hip disorder (https://neckandback.com/conditions/femoral-acetabular-impingement-syndrome-fai-hip-impingement-syndrome/) or greater trochanteric bursitis (https://neckandback.com/conditions/greater-trochanteric-bursitis/).

Sacroiliac belts can also help sacroiliac disorders (much more rare). Wearing this belt should not affect your success from fusion.

Thank you! FYI, the page for https://neckandback.com/conditions/greater-trochanteric-bursitis is not coming in correctly.

I am 4.5 months out of TILF and would like to take something for the hip pain mentioned above. Tylenol does nothing and I don’t want to take opiates.

Can I take NSAIDs at this point or prednisone ? If not what can I take to reduce pain and selling in hip ? I walk around 1.5 miles/day total.

I still have not had CT scan yet. My doc will not give until the 6 month mark.

I am getting MRI of hip tomorrow to see what is going on.

    Thank you!

I allow my patients who have had a TLIF to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatories at the three month mark. If there is moderate or greater pain, I think a short course of an oral steroid can be helpful. You could ask for a steroid injection directly into the hip joint.
