    Hi there

I’m writing to you again with regards to a previous question about my spine related issue. As you will have seen from previous communication I have been suffering with referred pain from the L5 S1 disc bulge that I have. Recent MRI scans have shown that there is no change from earlier scans (which I thought would be encouraging). My left sided pain, which mainly produced symptoms of pins and needles, is manageable so much so that I have recently been able to resume some exercise in the form of jogging. However, after a couple of months I began to experience pain in the right side which consisted of leg weakness (not being able to lift my whole whilst jogging), buttock pain, central calf pain and occasionally pain on the outer side of my foot. I stopped exercise for several months and received physio in the form of massage and an electronic device was used to help with blood flow to the particular area on my calf. After 4-5 sessions and several months of no exercise I appeared to be pain free, so on the advice of my physio I was given the all clear to reintegrate some light jogging with walking and to build up gradually. Unfortunately I am know back at the same situation with all the same symptoms, oddly enough the pain seems to come on after around 10mins of jogging. I have replaced all footwear to no avail and am now wondering if it’s possible for pain to swap sides? How likely is this to be spine related? Or as my current physio thinks, tight calf muscles?
I’m currently doing stretches and strengthening which don’t seem to assist. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Pete

    Hi again

I am aware that I have asked lots of questions in the past, but I wanted to get some advice if possible please. I am still suffering with buttock and leg pain in the left side (pins and needles etc.) but this has been managed only slightly with gabapentine and amytriptiline. With this been relatively managed I tried to return to some exercise in the form of jogging, this was going ok for about 8 weeks, when suddenly I began to feel pain in my right buttock and leg when trying to lift my leg. I have since stopped any form of exercise (including walking as this brings the pain on) but this has not decreased the pain. Is it possible that the herniated disk at the L5, S1 region could be causing this pain which is now on the right side. I have done some research as I though it might be linked to my hip flexors, but all the info doesn’t seem to point in that direction.
    Any advice will greatly received.
    Many thanks
    Pete.

    Hi there

Than you for your previous response.

I know it’s been a while since my last post, but I would like some additional advice please before I see my consultant once again to possibly discuss a date for surgery. Over the past few months I have ceased any form of exercise as this aggravates the symptoms I have been having. However, I have been doing Pilates for some months now, at my consultants recommendation, only for this to also aggravate my symptoms. Recently I had to take off work after a Pilates session, as this caused pain in the lumbar region of my back, left side hip and provoked the pins and needles into action once again. I have recently had an MRI scan which shows that the disc has not improved. My concern is that every time I do any form of sustained exercise I end up with referred pain from the disc. Would I be right in thinking now is the time to accept my fate and succumb to surgery as all other options have failed. If so, will I be able to resume any form of exercise once rehabilitated.
    Many thanks
    Pete

    Hi
Thanks for your previous response. I am aware I have asked lots of questions and hopefully this will be my last. In response to your reply, I have had the nerve block an additional injection into the lumbar region which both have failed in the last 24 months. My current situation is that I am unable do any form of physical activity without being in considerable pain (4/5 out of 10 on a good day and 7 upwards on a bad day which is most days), sitting down continues to bring on the buttock pain within minutes of driving and standing still for more than a minute brings on pins and needles within the thigh and foot. Additional to these existing issues I have now began to experience hip pain(left side once again) which radiates occasionally into the groin (left side, from original pain) expecially when walking. I am awaiting an appointment with my consultant in which I know he will arrange another MRI SCAN, but my concern is that this will show only a minor bulge to the L5 S1 region again and he ends up suggesting that it is not worth surgery.
Your advice has been very informative and I look forward to your response.
    Pete.

    Hi
I am replying to chat from several months ago (25453).
I decided not to go through with any back surgery as the pain in my buttock had gone -this is over a 4 month period now. However, as the pain resided I began to experience severe pain in the groin (opposite side to the previous buttock/disk pain), this was eventually checked out and a direct inguinal hernia was diagnosed. Recently this ‘hernia pain’ had completey resided, only for my buttock pain to return, with exactly the same symptoms as before. How likely is it that the two are connected and is it usual to have sporadic groin/referred back pain?
I will point out, that throughout these months I was able to get back into jogging and the referred pain did not present itself when jogging. As mentioned before I am reluctant to have surgery, but feel this is where it is heading. Any advice would be great.
    Many thanks
    Pete

    Hi there

Thank you for your reply to my previous post #23468. I have a couple more question that I would like advice on please. First of all I am still in the same predicament as before only I have had 2 more spinal injections that gave just 2 weeks reduction of pain only for the usual symptoms to reappear (buttock pain and pins and needles on the outer thigh heading towards the knee, sometimes the pain is less severe but it is always there). I have discussed this issue with my consultant (I’m still based in the U.K.) who is now sending me for another MRI scan. He has now said that because the pain has not resided he could perform a spinal decompression but he cannot guarantee that it wil work. I also discussed whether my problem could be Piriformis Syndrome but he said it would have shown up on a previous MRI scan. Could I have Piriformis Syndrome? Or, because the problem is chronic and my last MRI scan shows a mild disc bulge at L5 S1 is this really my core problem? I have been able to perform some very light jogging in which the buttock pain does not appear or hinder me whilst running on the day after. It seems that my pain is aggravated more by sitting or standing in the same position for too long. I have tried swimming which gave some mild reoccurrence of buttock pain. If my surgeon/consultant cannot guarantee a success where does this leave me? I do not want to take medication long term but I need regular exercise as I am now beginning to put on weight which I have no doubt this would aggravate my existing problem. Any advice would be greatly received.

    Pete.
