I had a microdiscectomy of L5/S1 10 days ago with complete pain relief other than surgical site pain. Last evening I was getting off the sofa and my back “popped” several times. This sensation was felt like a normal pop of the back. However, just after I noted some sciatic pain to the injured area with some sensation going behind the L knee. Only a 1-2 on a 10 scale and has remained the same fro the past 24 hours. There is some soreness to the affected lower back. Additionally, I have been walking up to two miles a day for about 4 days now. Is this reherniation or a normal part of the healing process?

    Regards,
    Sean

Some return of pain is not abnormal after a microdiscectomy. The nerve which has been compressed for a period will swell and cause some return of symptoms. You pain level is acceptable and should not be a worry at this point.

It is true that reherniations can occur in this initial period but symptoms would be expected to be much more severe (in the area of 5-8 on a VAS scale).

You sound like you are on tract and doing well. Continue to walk and most likely, you will be fine.
