    Hi Dr.

I am a 64 year old female who had an ACDF in March of 2011. I have more pain now then I did before the surgery. I believe this was an unnecessary surgery but it is to late now. I have hardware in my neck. I get pain in the back of my head, behind my ears and down my arms which sometimes is unbelievable. I did go to another Orthopedic Surgeon who took x-rays and said the hardware and screws look fine. The surgeon that completed this surgery is no longer in New York he has moved to Florida. Can you tell me why I get this pain. I do have my medical records from both the surgeon and the hospital. I would appreciate any answers you can give me.

There are many reasons to have pain after surgery. Was the diagnosis correct? Was the appropriate surgery performed? Was the surgery performed well? Did the surgery heal well? Is there another disorder that has occurred subsequent to the prior surgery?

All these questions have to be answered prior to any conclusions being drawn.

Lets start out with your prior symptoms before surgery, the diagnosis and reason your surgery was done. Then describe what subsequent symptoms you have developed after surgery.

See the section regarding “how to describe symptoms” for a description of the best way to convey your symptoms.

Thank you Dr. I am not at home right now. I will forward to you the original MRI that was taken prior to my surgery. I am not sure if the surgery was necessary. I was told by the surgeon that I would be able to do anything I did before the surgery which definitely isn’t true. I get pain in the back of my head which radiates into my arms. I have been to physical therapy and I am told it is from my Trapezoid muscle. I have not had an mri since the surgery. I have had x-rays and I was told I did heal well and I was fused. I had x-rays taken about 6 months ago by another doctor, I was told the hardware is fine and screws are in place.
