Dear dr. Corenman or whom it may concern:the past 2 years my neck has been cracking about every 15 minutes,
and my neck muscle feels tight every day every hour. My primary care
doctor has told me to do move my neck around, and use heat packs, yet
both have done nothing to make my neck problems go away. I use ultra
strength pain relieving cream menthol0% and methyl salicylate 30% every
day,as it is the only thing I have found which gives me any relief from
thinking about my neck. Do you have any suggestions about anything that may
    help? thank you

    sincerly
    Peter

Cracking in the neck generally is not really related to the causes of neck pain. Cracking sounds are generated by facets which are generally under suction. When the joint separates in many cases, the suction “pops” causing the cracking noise. Also, a tendon that rubs over a bone surface can also “pop”.

Neck pain is generally caused by the disc and facet. See https://neckandback.com/conditions/cervical-degenerative-disc-disease/ and https://neckandback.com/conditions/cervical-degenerative-facet-disease/.
