I have had SEVERE back pain for 3 days now, so bad I cant sleep. It started in my upper back between the shoulder blades now it is my entire back. Ice and heat do not help, in fact the ice makes it worse and it is sore to the touch, I keep crying because the pain is so bad and have had to call of work because of it. I went to the doctor today and she just felt up and down my spine told me they were muscle spasms, gave me a muscle relaxer and sent me on my way. I asked her if there was anything I could take for the pain because the 1000mg of naproxen was not working, she said no and left. I felt a little weird about the appointment so I went online and looked up what a muscle spasm is and everything that the internet said is NOT what I have.
The pain is continuous and on a scale of 1(being the lowest) and 10 (the highest) I am at a 9… all the time for 3 days now. I do not feel the muscles moving or anything and the pain is MOST concentrated on the sides of my spine. But I feel the pain all over my back and like I said before it doesn’t go away and return it is ALWAYS there. I really need to get this figured out because I cannot afford to miss any more work and I also go to school full time and finals are coming up. Can you tell me what it most likely is…and should I go see another doctor? Thank you!

You most likely have a spine origin for your back pain. In general, muscle spasms are a result of a spine disorder and not the cause of the disorder.

Pain that initially originates in the “upper back” commonly is referred from the cervical spine (neck). If the pain is severe and unrelenting, I think you need a specialist to determine the source of your pain.

This could be a spine surgeon, a PM&R doctor or even a family practice doc with a speciality in sports medicine and spine.
