Hey Dr. i have gone to my surgeon and a associate of his, they have ordered an MRI with and without contrast. The physical evaluation has lead him to believe a 3rd herniation as occurred. He says if the MRI shows another herniation that they will preform a fusion. So will keep you up to date after the results of the MRI.

Excellent. A fusion of this level would be the recommended procedure for a third disc herniation.

Hey Dr. i got the results of the MRI and they read as follows there is mild disc space narrowing at the L5-S1 level with mild loss of signal on the TR pulse sequences consistent with degenerative change. Status post right hemilaminectomy of L5 at the L5-S1 level. There is a recurrent right lateral recess disc herniation with surrounding granulation tissue at this level compressing the thecal sac and the right S1 nerve root. There has been resolution previously demonstrated enhancement of the right S1 nerve root since last study. So what does all that mean. Is this leading to a fusion surgery.

This appears to be a third disc herniation in a short period of time again compressing the nerve root. The typical treatment for this is a TLIF type of fusion.
