Sperryguy, can you find out if your surgeon used BMP in your TLIF and please let us know. It sounds like BMP is a real factor in fusing with a TLIF.

    Hope you feel better !

    Thank you kindly.

BMP is important in gaining a fusion but I don’t want to indicate that not using it is the wrong way to practice. I use it in every lumbar fusion but there are some insurance companies that will not pay for it (politics being what they are today). I have made a deal with my hospital that they will sell the BMP to the patient at their cost (which is still expensive even though it is off patent). The fusion rate without BMP is probably about 85% and with BMP is 95-99% depending upon the technique.

    Hi

My doctors did use BMP, though my CAT Scan indicates some fusion in my facet joints, all other places didn’t work. Thanks to all for reading and help. Will keep the forum up to date on my progress.

    Regards

    Steve

    sperryguy,

FYI, I met with my surgeon today. He uses BMP for the fusion on the sides where the screws and rods are not in the disc space. Perhaps that is why you only fused in the one part. Ask your surgeon exactly where he used the BMP.

Dr, Corneman uses BMP in the disc space as well in front of the cage. MY surgeon says he will only put part of my bone from the laminectomy in the front.

You may want to look up the rothman institute in phili, I hear they have very good surgeons there.

    Keep in touch.

    Hi Renee

The surgeon did use BMP on all places. I question if the facets actually fused vs a psuedoarthrosis. The doctors are somewhat baffled on the poor results. The Ortho Surgeon suggested (in the near future) a Bone Scan to determine which spots are “HOT”. I will certainly look at the Rothman Institute, but i doubt they accept my insurance being out of NYC. However, I am researching physicians out of NYU/Hospital for Joints Diseases.
Again, thank you for your help!

Will keep all of you in the loop

    All The Best

    Steve
