    Hello Dr. Coreman,

I followed your recommendation and had a single level ACDF with plating on C5-C6. I am 3 weeks post OP and doing well. Woke up from surgery with pain and tightness in neck, shoulder and back GONE!

if any one wants to see my Post OP progress go to my YouTube channel named: gettowaydriver

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions. My only worry now is potential for adjacent disc failure in the future. I hear a lot of what is called the “domino effect”.

A one level fusion in my opinion does not set you up for another level of problems. Genetics does that more than anything else. Remember to keep the neck strong and avoid compromising positions (head impact with mountain biking, skiing, etc)

    To aikamchawla,

Your father has a disc hernation of the C5-6 level compressing the C6 nerve root. See the section on “Symptoms of Cervical nerve injuries” to understand how this erve root works.

Pain that is not controlled with therapy and medications generally needs an epidural injection or SNRB (nerve block-see website). Rarely, surgery is needed if there is significant muscle weakness or the pain does not resolve with conservative care.
