I think all your questions are valid and should be asked and answered.

Dr. Corenman, Had my appointment today in Halifax and the surgeon said he feels the 5mm is enough to have surgery. My flexion and extension test was not good. He wants to do a posterior cervical fusion from the c2 to c7.He wants to put a plate in and depending on the condition of my spine he may have to take out bone but right now doesn’t think he will have to. Is this normal to fuse this many? Collar for 6 to 8 weeks.
confused a bit about fusing 2 to 7.thanks carol

Does putting a plate in mean that is a fusion? So much to understand. The doctor does many of these…..is problems with 1 out of a 100 good.thanks carol

Can a person still drive a car if they are fused c2 thru to c7? I am somewhat confused as to why he is fusing so much. thanks carol

Putting in a plate does mean fusion and I would expect this-at least at the C2-3 level. Why he wants to fuse C3-7 is something I do not have enough information to understand. If you have more levels of instability, then this might be necessary. If you need a laminectomy (removal of the back of the canal to release pressure from the spinal cord), maybe he feels that to maintain stability, he needs to fuse these levels.

It will be more difficult to drive a car with the number of fusion levels but this lack of motion can be compensated by using larger special mirrors to see to the sides and rear of the car.

I think the surgeon meant 1 out of 100 have problems and the rest do well. I am unsure about these numbers if that is the case.
