in reply to: C2 tumor + instability #6896
The two best institutions for cancer treatment are Sloan Kettering in New York and MD Anderson in Texas. If you mother has metastatic disease that caused the fracture of C2, radiotherapy can allow healing of the missing bone in certain circumstances.
Any well qualified spine surgeon should be able to treat the instability of C2.

The disc then herniated (common) and you developed leg pain.
If you have no motor weakness and you pain is abating, you can consider physical therapy and an epidural injection. If, however, you have weakness of a major motor group (limping due to quadriceps weakness or foot slapping due to tibialis anterior weakness), it is my opinion that surgery is necessary. See the section regarding when to have lower back surgery on this website for further discussion.
Your MRI scan is not included that I can tell.

This sound can originate from L2-3 or the sacroiliac joint. If you feel a shifting in the fusion area however and you are sure this is not originating from the levels above or below the fusion, this could indicate a pseudoarthrosis.

The C3-4 level can refer pain into the back of the head and around the ear through the facet. Your report of abnormal posture while watching TV causing your neck to become “stuck” and painful fits with a facet disorder.
Generally, this is not a disorder that requires an immediate surgical intervention. In fact, a good physical therapy program or chiropractic care can help the symptoms. If the symptoms do not abate, consideration of facet blocks is the next step (see website).
I cannot explain the nose pain as this region is supplied by a cranial nerve that is not affected by any cervical disorder.

Do not send me selected images as this generally does not work due to the fact all the images joined together are needed to understand the anatomy of the spine.
In regards to your lower back, degenerative disc disease (extremely common and generally benign) can cause most of the symptoms that you describe. The “tired feeling” or “sprained back feeling” is quite common. A good core strengthening program, especially using Pilates can help to strengthen the core muscles which will reenforce the weakened lumbar spine. There are rare patients that cannot tolerate these symptoms and a surgical consultation could be in order.
Now, if you have lumbar stenosis, that is a different story. Narrowing of the central spinal canal or nerve root exit zone (foramen) will compress the cauda equina or nerve root causing “numbness” when standing, walking and running.
Clicking and popping in the neck that is not painful is very common and by itself, nothing to worry about. Stiffness is generally related to degenerative disc and facet disease. If there is no instability or canal/foraminal narrowing, therapy is the beginning treatment necessary. Chiropractic treatment can be very effective.
