If my fusion is shown to be unstable, (I assume the stability is determined by flexion/extension X-ray), combined with my current pain, will I cause any further damage if I put off surgery? Alternatively if it is shown to be stable will the slight motion cause problems over time?

Could you point me to a resource that I can check to learn about how to read/use the flexion/extension X-ray to determine whether the fusion is stable/unstable.

    Thank You

I’m sorry for being dense, but what are neurological findings? By weakness do you mean an observed deficit in the legs etc., or just general weakness in the back? If I could tolerate the symptoms of back pain and tried to live a halfway normal life, ie work, swimming, etc, will that level of activity risk further damage to the spine since it has not fused.

    Thank You

If motion is established, how imperative is a revision surgery? Is this something that will result in damage if not fixed soon? My recovery from my last fusion was very difficult, and I’m not sure I am ready for another one quite yet.

I have a flexion/extension X-ray set up for 3/11. Since the CT and MRI indicate pseudarthrosis, should this be the last indicator that a revision is necessary? What should I look for in the X-ray results that indicate a lack of fusion. Thanks Again!

Thank you so much for all of your advice. I will definitely feel more confident approaching my NS now. One last quick question, really the last I promise. Would the vancomycin I was treated with for my post-op infection have interfered with the fusion process?

I’m sorry, I said “one more question” and I was almost right. Will anything have to be done about the damage being done to the vertebral body due to the failed fusion or will it heal on its own once the spine is stable?
I am taking a muscle relaxer, hydrocodone, and a NSAID. Knowing where my pain is originating, is there anything else I could look into taking to reduce pain? Thank you again.
