    Hi Dr,

Was wondering your thoughts on doing gentle yoga following L4/5 ALIF. Had surgery over 2 years ago and have a solid fusion – remain active today with plenty of swimming, weights, walking, some running. Battle constatnt tightness in glutes, hamstrings, general hip area, apart from that things are pretty good. Do have a disc bulge at L3/4 sitiining on a nerve but I have no symptoms from that.

Have done 3 sessions of yoga over the past 3 weeks and have zero pain during the class – I am extremely careful not to do any of the lumbar twisting but am bending and turning in positions that usually scare the hell out of me, but I am doing them pain free.

Whats your thoughts on yoga following a successful lumbar fusion?

    Cheers

    Dave – From Australia…

Yoga for a previous solid fusion of the lumbar spine is fine and recommended. These yoga teachers do have to be careful as they think that everyone should be as limber as they are. There are certain patients that yoga would be contraindicated (deg. spondylolisis, deg scoliosis, isthmic spondylo) but not for a lumbar fusion patient.

You should be able to rotate too. Just don’t combine rotation with loading (bending, rotating and lifting at the same time).
