I recently had a mountain biking accident and was taken to a level 1 trauma center. I was diagnosed as having a three column T5 Chance Fracture and was said that it was unstable. Compression Fractures in T3 and T4 T3,4,5,6 transverse process fractures t2,3,4 spinous process fractures. additionally broken ribs and sternum.

I had fusion with rods and screws levels T3 through T7 and at 3 weeks said it looked good and next at 3 months.

With fusing in these areas is there much motion loss and will the spine be as strong as before after fusion? asked questions but did not get to this one. also do fusions last a long time?

    thank you.

Once you have solid fusion, this part of the spine is stable and will not be affected by aging. Since it is in the thoracic spine, there is little motion compared to the cervical and lumbar spines so breakdown above and below the fusion level is much less likely. The spine will be strong enough to resist further injury at a slightly lower level of force.
