What is the difference between a micro disectomy and a subtotal disectomy? Are there any advantages and disadvantages when comparing the two methods?

These terms are describing two separate circumstances. A microdiscectomy is a surgery using the microscope to remove a disc fragment and free up the nerve root under strong magnification. A subtotal discectomy is a similar procedure that may or may not have used a microscope but the disc nucleus is partially removed (sub-totally).
