Hi,My name is Troadio laya, I am from the Philippines, my daughter has a very unusual spine deformity, she is 12 years old, she is like a dwarf – 3 feet, she has a twisted spine,I dont know how a spine surgery could make it possible to correct her spine deformity. In here we were quoted like 1 Million pesos for her spine surgery ($20,000)… But honestly, we dont have that kind of amount…I wrote because to ask how high is success rate for her age in this kind of surgery? I am starting to look for a sponsor or sponsors, though it is still uncertain, to get a chance for that surgery which is possibly next year, no matter what the outcome would be.
I hope I could send you the CT Scan of her spine.
I just hope for your response.

    Thank you

    Hopefully yours,

    TROADIO B. LAYA

Sorry about the delay in response. Your daughter has dwarfism and scoliosis, a common association. Her age means she probably has some growth left which means the scoliosis can advance in severity. If her curve is greater than 40 degrees (and it probably is), she will need surgery to straighten the spine and prevent the curve from increasing. I understand that 20,000.00 (US) is a huge amount of money but she will most likely need the surgery for quality of her life.

There is a program in the USA that occasionally will take out of country patients for this type of surgery. Contact the Shriner’s Hospital (use to be called Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children). They have hospitals in many states including California (probably not in Hawaii) and when I was a resident there, I did see kids from all over the world. They are run by the Masons and are a great organization.
