    Hi Doctor,
This is my second time m writing here.
I had disc herniation in L5 S1. About 1 year. I had no any motor weakness but had severe leg pain, able to walk for only 5 mins.
You warned me to do surgery, but I did it last August 13.
    Now these points after surgery:
    1. Less sensitivity in my right leg heel and toe.
    2. Till feel stress in nerve while do right leg up.
    3. Can I back to very normal life?playing?jumping?
4.after surgery what is d indication that it was successful?
How I can be sure it was ok?
    5. I did microdiscectomy, my doctor just cut d Xtra herniated stuff.

Please doctor help me about this.
    Thanks,
    Rahat

The micordiscectomy decompresses the nerve root but the nerve then has to heal on its own. Depending upon the severity of compression, the nerve might heal without any future symptoms but may not heal completely.

It is not uncommon for severely compressed roots to have some residual symptoms including numbness, paresthesias (pins and needles) as well as some mild aching. These generally are not impairing but “annoying” in some individuals.

You can generally get back to a normal lifestyle as long as you comply with the “BLT rule”. That is bend, twist and lift. You can do one of those activites without risk, two of those with some increased risk of reherniation and if you do all three at the same time, your risk increases substantially.

    Hi,
I have passed 4 weeks after my L5/S1 spine surgery. I am quite ok now .
I have no pain anymore. Can I now start playing activities?

I will assume that you underwent a microdisectomy decompression of the L5-S1 level. Look at the section “recovery information by surgery-Lumbar microdisectomy” to understand my guidelines for recovery.

I normally would have the patient in physical therapy and allow the therapist to help me make the decision as to activity toleration at the three to four week period.
