I am 1 month post ACDF c4-5/c5-6 and having quite a bit of pain in right shoulder blade and collar bone. The incision was made on right side of my neck due to parastesia down left arm. However, 2013 I had a reverse shoulder replacement of the right shoulder as a result of juvenile onset ra. How long can I expect this pain to last? Or should I follow up with the ortho doctor that replaced the shoulder? I’ve had hip replacement and bi-lateral shoulder replacements and nothing gave me as much of a fit as this shoulder after this ACDF.

First we have to connect the pain in the right shoulder with your neck. Obviously, problems with the total joint replacement in your right shoulder could have caused your initial shoulder pain. What tests were performed to implicate the neck in your shoulder pain? Did you have any selective nerve root blocks (SNRB) to prove this pain was radiating from your neck? Did the ACDF surgery change in any way your shoulder pain symptoms, either intensity or quality of pain?

I was having some pain in the shoulder before the surgery. I was hoping the surgery would alleviate some of this pain. I do have pain that seems to come from the right side of my neck and tracks into my shoulder and shoulder blade. Physical therapy seems to help some of this. I was just wondering if it’s normal to experience pain in the shoulder on the same side as the incision for this type of surgery. Thank you for your input. P.S. I saw my surgeon and she is impressed with how quickly I seem to be fusing.

The incision should have no bearing on your shoulder pain. It is hard to determine if your shoulder is caused by your neck or your shoulder implant. Normally, you can determine the neck nerve root association with your shoulder pain by using a SNRB (https://neckandback.com/treatments/epidural-injections-and-selective-nerve-root-blocks-diagnostic-and-therapeutic-neck/).
