HI DR WHAT ARE SOME REASONS A PERSON IS NOT A CANDIDATE FOR RHIZOTOMY BEFORE GIVING MMI?

Rhizotomy or the disruption of the nerve that innervates the facet is designed to give pain relief if the patient has facet generated pain that has failed previous treatment and is intolerable.

If the pain generation is from a structure other than the facet (disc or nerve), rhizotomy is not indicated.

If the patient has a facet block or medial branch block (the nerve that enters the facet) and does not gain significant temporary relief, they are not a candidate for rhizotomy.
