    Dr. Corenman

My surgeon tells me that perc screws are better than cutting open the back because there is no muscle stripping and therefore my recovery will be quicker and less painful.

    Is this accurate ?

This is not accurate. You have to split muscles to place these percutaneous screws which will cause some pain. In addition, the scar from placing these screws is twice as long (and in my opinion-more unsightly) as a simple central incision surgery.

My surgeon wants to do ALIF with perc
Screws. Say this is the fastest recovery.

How many inches is the incision for TLIF and is recovery time longer?

The ALIF with posterior screws is about the same recovery as a TLIF.

A TLIF surgery can be performed either with a “minimally invasive” procedure (which it is really not) where the total length of the incisons would be about 3-4 inches or a central (MIMS-minimal incision microsurgery) of about 2 inches.

All fusions generally take about the same time for recovery as the bone cells only grow at a certain rate. This rate is the rate-limiting step for fusion.

I met with a local surgeon today regarding TLIF.

!.) He said that he would not use BMP because it can lead to overgrowth ? Can fusion be done without it ?

2.) He said incision would be 5-6 inches ? Why is your incision only 2 inches ?

3.) Should I be looking for a surgeon that specializes in mirco surgery ?

    Thank you
