    Dr Corenman,

This is Sean. I finally had the second microdiscectomy on L4-L5 on Sep 8. The first surgery took place on the same disc in 2012. Both were fairly large herniations and there’s not much disc left at this point.

My post surgery recovery is satisfactory given the circumstances. I have no sciatica and most the pain is in the low back itself (3-4 at its worst). Could be arthritic in nature (given the thinness of disc) or could be related to surgery. Seems to be getting better and I am off all meds except Aleve PM at night. Given that it is only 5 weeks since surgery, I am hoping that this is sign of good things to come. Hope to start physio in about a week and hope that helps.

I have a trip planned from Houston to Asia over Christmas. This is a long planned family vacation. Though long flights, I will be flying business class on the long haul sectors. Short domestic flights in Asia on economy class. Mostly stay in luxury hotels and relax. No hectic activities. At most, maybe sitting in a car for couple hours while somebody else does the driving.

Would you undertake this trip about 3.5 months post surgery if I continue on this path of recovery?

    Thanks.

Glad the outcome was successful! I would not hesitate to take this trip 3.5 months post surgery. Remember no “BLT” (don’t bend, lift, twist) all at the same time.
