I have numbness in my thumb and first finger due to fusion of the 4,5 and 6 neck vertebrae. I am not in any pain. I had an injection in January to counteract the disc secretion affecting the nerves. It worked for about 6 months, then returned with a vengeance. I am due for another injection next month, but don’t want to continue doing this every 6 months for the rest of my life. What surgical options are available to keep this situation from recurring? Would like to get this resolved this winter. Thanks…………………….

I would say that you had a fusion of C4-6 due to nerve compression that relieved the compression (I assume). The thumb and first finger are generally innervated (supplied) by the C6 nerve which originates from the C5-6 level which was operated. I am unclear what you mean by “disc secretion” as the disc should be gone after the ACDF.

If the nerve was decompressed, residual symptoms could be a result of chronic radiculopathy (see https://neckandback.com/conditions/chronic-radiculopathy-neck/) or from incomplete decompression. The only way to determine the adequacy of decompression is with a new MRI or CT scan (or both).
