Hey there, I have been dealing with back paid for about 15 years now and have been through 2 different pain doctors before being finally diagnosed with a pars defect. I have received various injections as well as medication treatment. I have also recently tried the spinal stimulator with no relief. My pain doctor has told me I need to lose some weight to help relieve some pressure and pain from my back. I eat healthy, I exercise the best I can considering the pain I am in. Yet the weight never comes off at all. I am 6ft3 and weigh 393lbs. He has also stated that at this time the only way to resolve the pain in my back is surgery and I have been sent to 2 different surgeons…one of whom he sent me to two different times. Neither will consider operating because of my current weight and because I am a type 2 diabetic. So my question is what do I do? I have tried everything I can think of to lose weight, even considered weight loss surgery but I won’t put myself through it. I have no life to speak of anymore. I can’t even walk through a grocery store for more then 5-10 minutes before I’m in tears from pain.

Any suggestions or help out there????

Are there doctors who would operate on me???

I fully appreciate your dilemma. You can’t work out due to your back pain and your weight overloads your back, increasing your pain. There are exercises that you can do that should not increase back pain. One is water walking where the water will unweight you and if you persist, you can drop some weight. The other is a bicycle ergometer where you sit and “pedal the bike” with your hands. This allows cardiovascular exercise without loading the spine.

It does sound like you could be a candidate for fusion. Your weight does make the surgery more complicated and risky (blood clots, skin healing and heart/kidney issues). Maybe you could meet with a councillor for weight management or even consider a lap band procedure if possible. You want to reduce the risk of fusion complications as much as is possible.
