    Hello Dr.Corenman!

I decided to write here since different doctors would tell me different things like “you are stressed, just calm down”, “you are ok”, etc. but my problem persists. I am 26 years old female who is working on a computer 9 hours per day.
It is true that it all started with several stressful situations I had in my life. Then came the neck stiffness a few months ago. I did nothing much about it. After that I had strong headache where the head and neck meet – I was diagnosed with sinusitis ( ? ) which was later proven with Xray that my sinuses are clear…I do have allergies though, but it is not active during winter.
With the headache and neck stiffness, tinnitus appeared as well but there was nothing wrong with my ears (I had several tests). Also an another thing – I hear a cracking noise behind my right ear ( or in my neck..) when I turn right or when I run. This particular noise is not persistent – it is present always the first several minutes while I am running and after I have run for 10 minutes for example – it is not there. Could it be my muscles pulling some bones? To make sure this and the tinnitus are not because of allergies, I was prescribed some allergy medicine but it did not help.

All the 3 doctors I visited told me I shouldn’t make any other tests or visit any other specialists.
I decided I should take more vitamins and for two weeks I have been taking fish oil, vitamins B and Magnesium which made my tinnitus more bearable ( it is not this loud anymore) and my muscle twitching around the head and neck much less.

I would appreciate it if you share your opinion on my case, if this could be a neurological or muscle-related problem or if I should take any other additional tests. My blood test is fine as well as my blood pressure is normal.

    Thanks in advance!

You might have facet degeneration of the upper cervical facets. Pain generated from these facets will cause base of skull pain (headaches) that can radiate up over the head (greater occipital nerve involvement). The clicking or popping noises are from irregular facet surfaces that “bump into each other” when they slide against each other. Tinnitis is generally not a part of this syndrome.

You might find a great interventionist (injection doc who has lots of experience with this and can read MRIs or CT scans) to get an opinion.
