Hi,Dr Donald its very nice and beneficiary for patients like me.I’m 25 years old and had a RTA about 3 years. It been diagnosed I’ve post wedge fracture in TH7 and TH12 which is causing chronic back and low back pain. X rays of the thoracic and lumbar spine shows a slight wedge fracture of the TH7 and massively wedge shaped TH12 vertebrae. Its also affecting my posture. My upper deck is curving backward and my lower deck is curving forward so I’m having double hunch in my back.I want to know is there any option for me to have it sorted out permanently.
I am unclear what an RTA is but I assume this was a traumatic accident that caused your spine fractures. Angular fractures (wedge fractures) of the thoracolumbar spine are quite common. Typically, any angulation over 20-25 degrees in my opinion should be surgically corrected at the time of accident. The reason has to do with the accomodation of this angulation.
With this 25 degree angle, the lumbar spine has to “bend backwards” by the same amount to balance your torso over your pelvis. If the lumbar spine cannot accomodate this, you will be pitched forward and use more energy to stand upright.
The “bending backwards” or hyperlordosis will increase the pressure on the facets and can prematurely wear these structures out.
These angulations can be corrected surgically. It depends upon what has happened to the spine since the accident to determine how much this can be corrected and how many segments need to be involved with the correction.
