I wanted to follow up on my progress for anyone else who might be going through something similar. I had my microdiscectomy surgery on Monday. When I woke up, I still had pain starting at my butt and going down my leg. Needless to say, it was very emotional and I felt somewhat defeated. I was hoping it would be gone immediately, but I also know that it sometimes takes time for the nerve to heal. My surgeon said that the herniation had become stuck and tangled up around the nerve, which I guess can explain why I would always have excruciating pain with certain movements and pretty much just layed around every day leading up to surgery.

It’s now three days after the surgery. The leg pain has subsided and is only about 10-20% of what it was prior to surgery. I still get some pain in my butt along with tingling and numbness feelings down my leg and into my foot, but the reduction of pain makes me so happy that I feel like crying.

The pain from the actual surgery was extremely minimal. Pretty much the only discomfort that I’ve had is from the incision itself. I was expecting to be extremely store and have my entire low back in pain, but that has not been the case at all. I’ve been walking every day and I don’t need any narcotics, Tylenol, or anything else to deal with the discomfort since it’s very manageable. If anyone has ever had a mole cut out of their skin before, it basically just feels like that but with a bigger incision. The incision is tender and sore, but I otherwise feel great.

I’m still log rolling in and out of bed, limiting my sitting, and not twisting, bending, or lifting anything over 10 pounds. My follow up appointment is in about 2 weeks and I hope that I keep feeling better each day. For anyone else who might be dealing with this, just hang in there. It’s tough and can be very emotional. Find a doctor who is your biggest fan and keep working with him or her to find the best resolution for you.

A big thank you to Dr. Corenman again for all of his feedback on this website!

Great results and I’m happy to hear you had another microdiscectomy and not a fusion! Remember BLT’s to avoid. See; https://neckandback.com/treatments/conservative-treatment-mechanical-lower-back-disorders/
