    Dear Donald,
I have read many of your writings and now I am even more confused so I must ask this from you please.
I am 36 years old.Used to have some lower back pain but nothing serious and have gone to fizio occasionaly but this time I have had most likely the wrong advise to do some excercise to heal my pain.At this time never had any pain or numbness in my leg or tailbone only lower back after some too hard excercise I assume. But what happened now was that I forced hard my lower back to the a specific excercise which was to lean backwards while lying down face down.pushing upper body up as hard and as much as I could to stretch …After days of practise my lower back pain has got much worse and now feeling pain in my leg when sitting and also tailbone is in constant pain.
I will have an MRI hopefuly soon but I live in Ibiza and here it is extremely difficult to receive helpful advise.Thank you so much.

You previously had intermittent lower back pain. This is common as 80% of the population will develop low back pain. The exercises you were given included hyperextension of the spine. This exercise normally does not induce pain but with certain patients, hyperextension can be detrimental.

If you had preexisting degenerative facets, an isthmic spondylolisthesis or spinal/foraminal stenosis (see website), hyperextension will cause problems.

First, stop the hyperextension exercises and allow a little time to pass to see if the symptoms will abate. You can try OTC NSAIDs (over the counter non steroidal medications- see website) if you have no sensitivity to the medications. If the symptoms do not go away, you need a consultation with a spine expert (surgeon, PM&R doctor or family doc with significant spine experience).
