    Hello Doctor,

I had a laminectomy 1 year ago for congenital tethered cord at S1. Symptoms reappeared including headaches, urinary retention, numbness and tingling of the back of legs and bottom of both feet, pain to lower back, hips, and legs, falls, weakness etc. I went for an MRI and results indicated central disc herniation at S1 (which I understand) and large posterior fusion defects at L5 and S1. I do not understand this diagnosis. My doctor did not answer when I asked what this was. He only told me I need a neurosurgeon. Are you able to explain to me what this is? I have the MRI images and I am a nurse but my knowledge is small and all I can say it it doesn’t look proper. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

The initial surgical report would be helpful. Did the surgeon try to fuse the L5-S1 segment when he did the laminectomy and de-tethering operation? I am unclear what “large posterior fusion defects at L5 and S1” are. Is this a large laminectomy with fusion or was there an attempt at fusion with no success? Most commonly, a CT scan can be necessary when you are dealing with the question of fusion.
