    Hello Doctor,

My sister is 23 years old. She had severe back pain from past 2weeks. After having MRI done reports showed as L5S1. It was said that due to heavy lifting or pressure on her back or due to too much travelling she suffering from this. Her bone has come out and pushing the vein due to which she is having numbness in her left leg.
Please advice is surgery required in this case and also after surgery wil she be normal and do all activities properly. Please guide us

Your report is incomplete. Does your sister have just lower back pain or buttocks and thigh pain. Is it only on one side or central pain. Does she have any weakness?

The report, “Her bone has come out and pushing the vein due to which she is having numbness in her left leg” probably is referring to a lumbar herniated disc (see website) pressing on her nerve root.

See the section “when to have lower back surgery” to understand what the indications are for surgery.

    Hello Doctor,

Here I give you the complete report mentioned in the MRI.

Disc desiccation. At L5 S1 level’ as evidenced by loss of normal T2 hyper intensity
L5 S1 Disc height is reduced , shows posterior and left paracentral protusion indenting the anterior epidural fat, mildly in indenting the thecal sac,
Traversing S1 nerve roots more so soft on left and mildly compromising the left neural for amen.
Mild posterior bulge of few cervical discs.

Kindly let me know what is the exact problem and what is the correct step to be taken in this case.

    Thanks and regards.

The report of MRI findings is not enough. What are her symptoms? See the section “how to describe lower back symptoms” to understand how to report what she is experiencing.
