    Hi,

Just a quick question. Next week I undergo an L4-S1 fusion surgery. I’m 57 y/o, male, very active lifestyle, previous 20+ years competitive powerlifting, bodybuilding, etc.

My question is what can I expect as far as returning to “exercise?”

I know my lifting/competitive days are essentially – over. And I’m fine with that. Actually, at this point in time I just want to be able to – walk! Hiking, swimming, biking, etc.

Will I be able to engage in these sorts of things??

    Thanks!!

If your discs above the fusion level are “normal” without any angulation, then you should be able to do the timing you mention. I would avoid impact/loading activities such as running or tennis. Certain activities such as skiing can be OK as long as you are not aggressive and don’t fall hard.
