    Dr. Corenman,

I am 13 weeks post 2 level C5- C7 acdf with a plate. Do you typically allow your patients to exercise on an elliptical machine with no arms at this point? I understand each case is different.

My Surgeon does not want me to start therapy until after 5 months post op.He feels they may do more harm then good at this point. Does turning your head side to side hurt your chances of having a successful fusion if you have plate fixation?

    Thank you,

    Eddy

Every doctor is different so what I do may not match others.

I allow my ACDF patients to use the elliptical at one week post-op when the collar comes off. They are not allowed to “sweat” until week two when the dressings are off. I allow them to use their arms when they first start to use the elliptical.

I start therapy at 6 weeks post-op and most are finished by week 10.

Patients turning their head from side to side (yes/no exercises-see website) is done when the collar first comes off at 7-10 days.
