    Hi Dr. Corenman,

I have been experiencing tingling and weakness on my left arm over past year. It has gotten noticably worse. I had an MRI done and it revealed disc pushing up against spinal cord.

    My neurosurgeon recommended ACDF surgery.

I wanted to get your opinion .

I have uploaded a picture of one of the MRI images showing the problem here:

Can you give me some advice on how bad it is and if u would recommend surgery based on what the scan shows?

Also are there safe alternatives to ACDF surgery?

You have sent one side view image (sagittal T2) of your neck. This does demonstrate compression of the spinal cord at C6-7. This is not enough to come to some sort of conclusion.

Your complete description of symptoms is needed as well as the history of these symptoms. Potential past medical history that could involve symptoms would also be helpful. Do you have lupus, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis or any other disorder that can affect the symptoms? See the section on “How to describe symptoms” to understand what needs to be conveyed.

A physical examination then can confirm if the symptoms match the imaging. This combination of complete history, physical examination and imaging review is necessary to fully confirm what potential surgery should be planned.

I can give you information on two of these three requirements but I obviously cannot know the results of the physical examination over the internet (but I am developing a system that eventually could work).

At this point, I do not review images. This may change in the next six months. For now, you would have to see me personally.
