I had dissolvable stitches put in my posterior fusion 2 weeks ago today and my neck looks healed but the stitches are still there. My VON nurse said they may get infected if they don’t dissolve. She thought they should be gone in 2 weeks.
What do you advise? Other than that I am good. Thank you so much. Carolns

The stitches in dissolvable sutures can take between two and six weeks to dissolve. If subcuticular monocril, a clear “fishing line” type suture is used under the skin (subcuticular means under the skin), this will take two weeks to dissolve.

Vicryl is a suture that is used for the deeper layers. This suture takes six weeks to dissolve.

Do not worry about suture dissolving as long as it is in the subcuticular layer and not exposed.

I want to thank you for helping me about these stitches. I had peace of mind over the weekend.
Went to the doctor and she said the same as you. She touched my stitches and 5 fell off. You know the help you give us is really priceless. Thanks so very much Dr. Corenman. Doing good here. Carolns
