I had spine fusion little over 6 months ago. I just had my follow up with my surgeon. He said I was almost 100% fused. We did use BMP. I feel pretty good. I walk about 2.5 – 3 miles/day.

However, I just looked at the CT scan report from the radiologist that says No significant fusion of L4/L5 and interdisc spacer at L4-L5 without significant fusion.

I am now confused. Any suggestion on what to do? Is this common?

    Thank you

Some radiologists may not understand the CT scan but this one read the findings as no fusion of L4-5. I would have your surgeon drive you through the images to demonstrate the fusion mass. This is not common that the surgeon will not help you view the images. Most of the surgeons I know will have a viewing station and review the images with their patient.

    Thank you.

My surgeon did in fact walk me thorough all the images and showed me areas of bone mass. Of course, I don’t know what the images are suppose to look like. So how is there such a disconnect between the surgeon and the radiologist ?

is there anything I can do to double check like flex/ext X rays or doing another Ct scan somewhere else?

Who trumps who in this; the surgeon or the radiologist ?

Perhaps I can send the CD to you for your review !?

This is a dilemma in spine surgery. Some radiologists do not know how to read a fusion mass on a CT scan and will not comment on it. Some radiologists however are true experts and can read as well as any spine surgeon. Most spine surgeons and neurosurgeons can easily read a CT scan but the surgeon of record might be “tainted” by wanting an outcome of fusion and possibly mistakenly reading something that might not be there.

I do review images but I have a fee. This is called a long-distance consultation and involves an entire patient experience including interview and personal phone consultation. You can call 888 888-5310 for more information.

Thank you, I am glad to pay fee and will follow up with your office on Monday.

I did follow up with a Dr. who said that I ham 80-85% fused. I have lot “woven” bone behind the cage and some inside cage. It is white. I think I may have one small “strand” connecting top to bottom right behind that cage, however he says I am almost there.

I believe perhaps radiologist is not calling for full fusion until he see full strand top to bottom, however it has only been 6 months. I also just had flex/ext X rays which show no movement of the pre-existing spondylolisthesis.

My symptoms are much better at the 6 month mark. I walk 5-6000 steps/day for an avg of 2.5 – 3 miles.

What are your thoughts on all of the above please?

    Thank you
