    Hello Dr. Corenman:

    My MRI shows that I was born with a cervical narrow spinal canal.
    Does it mean that the rest of my spinal canal is also congenitally narrow?

    Generally, shortened pedicles in the cervical spine indicate a genetic condition where all pedicles are short. This however might mean nothing for the long run. Many patients who have congenital cervical stenosis have no problems with their lumbar spine. The thoracic spine is so rigid that it is uncommon to develop stenosis in that section.

    Also, there is much less danger dealing with congenital lumbar stenosis as there are only nerve roots below L1 and nerve roots are more resistant to compression and permanent injury.
