Hello. I started to have chronic back pain in about my 6 month of pregnancy. Since then it hasn’t gone away abd my daughter will be two next month.

I saw a dr when it started who said it should go away after pregnancy but it didn’t…

Then I saw another dr this year who referred me to a pt. I went a few times and she said I should have a herniated disc in l4 l5. I don’t have insurance and haven’t gotten an xray of any kind.

My question is should I try to get an mri? I want to stop the pain and find out what is wrong. My husband wants me to see a chiropractor but I don’t want to go… I would like to treat this conservatively.

I have pain while sitting and standing in the lower back, numbness in my thigh and tingling pain down my leg into my toe now. The back pain goes around my hip and down to my leg.

Could this be anything else than the herniated disc?

I thank you for reading this and if you have time to answer me.

You need to be more specific about your pain. Is it back pain (in the small of your back) or is it buttocks and leg pain? Does the pain stay on one side or is it central in your back? See the section “how to describe symptoms” to fully understand how to convey what symptoms you have?

Thank you Dr. Corenman for answering.

I hope I can be clearer about everything.

I have a dull ache in my lower back, a shooting pain in my left buttocks and back of my left thigh, numbness in my left knee and upper thigh and left big toe.

The pain is usually 80% in my back and 20% in the leg.

At worst it’s been about an 8 and now it’s about a 4. The numbness in my toe is new and buttocks so I’m trying to get use to that.

It hurts the worst in the morning and at night but generally all day causes pain.

Mt pt said my right hip was slightly overcorrecting for the pain on the left. I do limb when I have a lot of pain.

Sitting and laying hurt my back and walking hurts my leg.

I hope this helps. Thank you.

Most of your pain is in the lower back. Most likely, the pain is degenerative disc disease (see website). You do have some left leg pain and numbness which is likely from a herniated disc compressing the root. Since however most of your pain is lower back, the disc herniation might only be a small part of your global problem.

I do believe that an MRI and then an epidural injection would be helpful if indeed you have a herniation associated with degenerative disc disease.
