    Dr Corenman,

Can you tell me what I should expect from a Cervical foraminotomy? How painful is the first couple of days after surgery? How long should I expect to be out of work as a middle school teacher? Is the recovery easier than a 1 level ACDF. There isn’t a lot of information about this procedure.

I have pain in my right trap area and have lack of motion to the right. Nothing down the arm.

    Thanks,
    Andy

Cervical foraminotomies can be quite effective in the right circumstances. If there is herniation, it is more effective. If it is nerve compression from foraminal collapse due to uncovertebral joint spurring, less effective. Recovery before non-strenuous work can be 2 weeks or even less but some patients can take up to 4 weeks, the same time as an ACDF or artificial disc replacement.

    Dr. Corenman
