Hello, I feel pain puffy in my c2 and also have suboccipital problems. I can always put my finger on the c2 area and feel it is different from the right. My suboccipitals itch and one Dr. told me to use selsum blue. I left in tears. I went to another Dr. who thought I needed antidepressants and anti seizure meds for my migraines. i have tried them in the past and they are very scarryyy meds. It did not help with my headaches/migraines. I feel the headches/migraines are mixed with my c2 area and muscle related triggers. The c2 area is puffy and sometimes I get small bumps like pimples .. like a fistula? They itch and sometimes they will go away. Feels like the puffy is leaky inside and the fluid is trying to go somewhere hence the itching and them fistula like bumps. I have had MRI and xray. Thank you for any help and for reading. Kind Regards, Gretchen

One of the causes of suboccipital headaches is inflammation of the facets at C2-3. The “puffy feeling” could be a sensory abnormality of these nerve roots which is not uncommon

You could consider finding an interventional injectionist (PM&R or anesthesiologist) to perform diagnostic and therapeutic facet blocks on C2-3 (keep a pain diary- see website). This may help to diagnose and possibly relieve the headaches.

There are other causes of suboccipital headaches including arthritis of occiput-C1, vascular origins and central origins (brain mediated).

Thank you for responding. Do you have a practice in Denver? Is it possible if you could provide a few reputable place? I am so afraid.. I have been trying to find help and have been living in such a cheated life of pain. I have been to physical therapy a few different places for this. Is PM&R different? In my MRI and xray, I was told I didn’t have arthritis.. but maybe it was a glance over and wasn’t really looked at well? I guess, I should make the drive to see you as I am at a huge loss and you care enough to respond to me in your busy schedule. Kind Regards, Gretchen

Since I left the faculty of the University of Colorado, I have not practiced in Denver. I do not give endorsements on this site but if you call the 888 number, Margaret will be able to give you some potential referrals in Denver.
