I’ve been having a lot of pain in my hand and arm that has been difficult to diagnose. Recent x-rays show stage 2 spondylolisthesis in C7-8. How likely is my hand & arm pain coming from my neck problems? And is surgery the most likely remedy?

Pain in the hand and arm certainly could be from a pinched nerve in the neck (cervical radiculopathy) but other problems could also cause these symptoms.

“Stage 2” spondylolisthesis at C7-8 probably means a grade II cervical degenerative spondylolisthesis at C7-T1 (there are only 7 cervical vertebra). A grade two slip means the vertebra above has slipped forward between 25% and 50% of the diameter of the vertebra below-quite a significant slip. Could this cause these symptoms?

The answer is yes but with that significant slip, I would assume the levels above are not pristine. Check the section “symptoms of cervical nerve injuries” to understand what nerves cause what symptoms.

I think you need a consultation with a good spine surgeon to diagnose the cause of your pain.

Yes, you’re right it is Stage 2 and my regular doctor said it was the bottom 2 cervical vertebra. Our last appointment 3 weeks ago was when she told me the results of my back x-rays. I’d been out of town and hadn’t really had a chance to think about what she said. I also have 2 in my lower back with the same Stage 2 and to be honest I’m pretty worried now that I’ve done a little research.
Thank you so much for responding and I definitely will be seeing a spinal surgeon!
