    hi Dr. Corenman.

2-19-15 had ACDF surgery on C4-c5,c5-c6. bone graft.
    released 2-20-15 “friday afternoon”

by saturday have a 1000 questions and no way to get a answer.lol

symptoms before- numbness in right hand and fingers -thumb,index,ring,pinky.
right arm bicept inactive-ruffly 4 months.

mri showed right foraminal narrowing @ c4-5,and left foraminal narrowing@c5-c6 above the incomplete segmentation of c6-7

at home now, hard brace, bone stimulator daily. follow up in 6 weeks, brace removal and begin rehab.

1st question is there a guideline on when should start to see improvement on the numbness in hand, arm muscle. know its only few days out so not expecting miracle turn arounds.just trying to get an idea on a some what time line of whats normal.

2nd question-another one of those could be answered by doctor except it is the weekend. but before surgery they had me stop takeing the naproxen 800mg my primary had me takeing due to the fact a blood thinner, ect.
question is one of the biggest aggrevations is the lump in throat, ect. does the naproxen help that and is it safe to resume takeing that medication. only meds on is robaxin 7.5, percocet 10’s. and my daily claratin-only 37yrs old, fairly descent shape, so not alot of maintence medications. just the pain, muscle relaxers, and sinus/allergy.
also having lower back issues, which will be dealt with after recovery from cervical.

3rd. is there a orthopedic pillow, ect on the market that can be used while in the hard brace. think its refered to as a aspen vista hard brace? sleeping can be a challenge in it. but only supposed to remove for showers.

I have some questions regarding the symptoms compared to the MRI findings. Right foraminal narrowing at C4-5 would affect the C5 nerve. This nerve does not descend into the hand (stops at the upper arm-see section “symptoms of cervical nerve injuries” on the website).

You have left foraminal narrowing at C5-6 (C6 nerve) which does go down into the hand but you had no complaints of the left hand.

You have a Klippel Feil syndrome of C6-7 (partial segmentation-see website). This does not mean much.

Arm pain typically recedes within a couple of days of surgery. Numbness (if we assume that the C6 nerve on the right was involved) will take about 3-6 months to resolve. Pins and needles (called paresthesias) should resolve in a couple of weeks if not sooner.

Biceps weakness (again assuming C6 right involvement) normally improves 1/2 a grade (there are 5 grades) immediately and can take up to 12 months to fully recover.

Naprosyn is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. The bone grafts heal through inflammation so retarding that process is not wise. That is why I require patients to be off of these medications for six weeks after an ACDF or ADR (artificial disc replacement).

A thin pillow is ofter more comfortable than a thick pillow for these collars but a very soft pillow is important.
