    Dr. Corenman,
I had c6/c7 fusion 1.8 years ago; no issues; had chair massage 2 weeks ago; told the therapist i had had surgery and not to touch my neck. He pushed on my cervical spine and I now have what feels like swelling around the incision site. Neck muscles around site tight, throat tight, feels like sore throat or need to cry sensation; no other pain (arms, nerves)…

Concerned he broke or moved something … Will see my surgeon next week, but I am afraid to move my neck as I don’t know what could be going on in there. Is it possible he broke/moved a veterbrae or fusion? Or pushed a screw forward? As you might imagine, I am scared, angry and concerned … Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

And I bring this up for others to be extremely cautious regarding who/how your neck is touched.

If you had a solid fusion at C6-7, the massage therapist could not have affected this level with their hands. The therapist certainly could have stretched and bruised the muscles around the fusion and it is rare but not unheard of that forceful manipulation can herniate a disc at a different level.

The screws and hardware should be stable and not affected by massage.

Thank you! for responding. So very appreciated. It’s been two weeks and I feel something in my throat when i take my medicine; like it catches on something hard. I so hope it is swelling and will resolve. I will report back once x-rayed.

Just returned from the surgeon who worked me in; all hardware looking ok; he concurred with Dr. Corenman that highly unlikely massage could have affected the bones/hardware. He thinks muscle spasm and will work itself out; ironic since i was getting a massage! for muscle spasm in shoulder …. such is my life … happy to not be headed for surgery though …
    best to all
