I have suffered from extreme hand, arm, and neck pain on both sides for over a year. Essentially carpal tunnel like symptoms, with tingling, numbness, and tremors. I have had an emg done which were negative. I’m trying to understand these results. Any help is greatly appreciated!

MI MR SPINE, CERVICAL W/O CONT.

Comparison: Plain films of the cervical spine

Technique: Unenhanced MRI of the cervical spine per institutional protocol.

Findings: The cervical spinal cord is normal in signal and morphology. Vertebral body heights are maintained throughout. There is a small high T1 and T2 signal structure within the C3 vertebral body which is high in signal on STIR imaging. This may represent an atypical intraosseous hemangioma. Marrow signal is otherwise normal throughout. The visualized soft tissue structures surrounding the cervical spine are unremarkable in appearance.

    C2-C3: Unremarkable.

C3-C4: There is a small broad-based posterior disk osteophyte complex and very minimal uncovertebral arthropathy. This causes no significant central canal or foraminal stenosis.

C4-C5: Mild disk desiccation. Very minor right uncovertebral arthropathy causes trace right neuroforaminal stenosis. Otherwise, negative.

C5-C6: Mild disk desiccation. Minor right uncovertebral arthropathy causes trace right neuroforaminal stenosis. Otherwise negative.

C6-C7: Mild disk desiccation. There is a small broad-based posterior disk osteophyte complex with a tiny central disk protrusion. No significant neuroforaminal or central canal stenosis is identified.

    C7-T1: Unremarkable.

Impression: Essentially unremarkable MRI of the cervical spine.

The MRI is really benign without compressive nerve or cord regions that could be blamed for your arm and hand pain and numbness. There could be compressive regions in your shoulder, elbow or hand that are not revealed by EMG but still cause your symptoms.
