Medications

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) - these medications are best known for their over the counter availability (Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen). These drugs work by blocking one of the causes of inflammation. They also block pain receptors. Their success can be hit or miss but when effective, they can work wonders. There are side effects associated with them.

Steroids – These are prescription medications that are very effective for nerve pain and spinal inflammation. Unlike the NSAID above, these medications block both causes of inflammation. They can only be used in short bursts and can have significant side effects.

Muscle Relaxers – Spine pain is generated by the degenerative or injured segment. Muscles try and protect the damaged segment by “tightening up” to prevent motion. The pain from chronic muscle spasm is relieved by these medications. Some of these also act as sedatives which also help with pain control.

Pain Relievers – These medications are most typically narcotics. Narcotics are very good for relieving pain but have significant side effects. The most notorious are euphoria and habituation. Short term use is very effective but long term use can only be utilized by rare individuals. All individuals who take narcotics will develop constipation to one degree or another.
