    Dr. Corenman,

I had my epidural about a week ago; I haven’t noticed any change in my pain levels. I got hurt at PT seven weeks ago today. As of today, I have the following symptoms: Pain in my stomach when I don’t sit up straight; an L-shaped pain in the muscles on the right side of my back; ribs that feel inflamed to the touch; and lots of pain in my butt randomly. I feel a little defeated here. It just feels as if I haven’t healed in this amount of time, something has gone wrong like a reherniation. I know it is definitely saw-and-tooth healing, but it’s a long process.

I have a CT myelogram scheduled for next week to determine what’s going on. Another weird twist: My doctor noted that if I was still in pain, I could go get a spinal cord stimulator; this was noted before imaging was even suggested. That’s a more aggressive move, right? I would think that other options would be vetted beforehand, I guess.

Anyway, thanks for all your thoughts.

    Dr. Corenman,

They want to do the ESI first. Should I request a MRI first?

Also, I have a ton of burning sensations since switching to Lyrica. I *think* I am starting to improve, but it’s super strange and slow. I don’t know if flare-ups are supposed to last more than 4 weeks, but I am starting to get concerned that I have reherniated instead of having an aggressive nerve agitation.

    Dr. Corenman,

I will! I do have a question as a follow-up. My flare up pains have mostly gone away for small exception–my upper rib cage on the right side hurts terribly. It started occurring right when I got hurt at PT. The pain is nearly constant (it’s a throbbing pain), and then it switches to the middle of my left rib cage. I had surgery on my T11/T12, so this pain is above the surgery site. Is it possible for a flare-up (or reherniation if that is the case) to cause pain or nerve issues higher than the injury site?

    Thanks!

    Dr. Corenman,

I was scheduled for an ESI in two weeks, so I am hoping that will be helpful! I am in the midst of a strange two-week flare-up with pain that does not quite get to the severity of pre-op, so I am hopeful that this calms down some inflammation and its not a re-herniation!

    Dr. Corenman,

I took prednisone when I was in college, and I was given it for allergy purposes. I tried it again last summer, and my heart rate sparked again. I am guessing that the prednisone is causing it to some degree, which is why I am wary of injections. This is probably a silly question, but are there injections without prednisone that would alleviate the inflammation?

    Thanks!
