Hi, I had a laminotomy/discectomy 2 1/2 montha ago. Post-op my right leg is weak and I cannot tip toe that much using this leg. 2 months after doctor orders EMG , stating more chronic, active radiculopathy affecting the L5-S1 nerve roots. No focal diffuse neuropathy. Gastroc and tibialis anterior is reduced with few polyphastic. What does this means? I can now do 10 calf raises as compared to 0-3 1-4 weeks post-op. I am scared that I might not regain my foot strength and that my leg weakness is the result of my surgery.

    Hi Dr Corenman,

Just a follow-up, my leg pain 2 weeks post-op subsides. My post-op MRI shows a buldge a mild indentation of the right S1 nerve root and it is also touching the left S1 nerve root. After the leg incident I feel much better with no pain. I undergone Physical Therapy at this time to strengthened my weak right leg post-op. I can do heel raises using my right leg which I cannot do post-op. But Doctor ordered EMG stating ” Chronic active radiculopathy L5-S1. No focal and diffuse neuropathy lower extremities, gastroc and tibialis anterior shows few polyphasic and reduced energy”. According to my surgeon weakness is mild. But my concern is 10 weeks post-op I am having low back pain without leg pain. Never had back pain before only sciatica. But both of my legs have tingling sensation and my left leg has a slight numb on my sole. Also, my upper back went stiff and has cramps also. MRI result of cervical MRI has mild buldge without impingement. I would really like to ask for your opinion.

    Thanks

    Hi Dr. Coreman,

I am four weeks post-op. Right after surgery (l5-s1 laminectomy and discectomy) I developed numbness on the side of my foot and sole. Numbness diminished after 3-4 weeks but the numbness on the side of my sole is still there. I can move my toes but I have new reported calf weakness and sciatic pain s1 dermatone. Started PT after 2 weeks post-lp and my pain signifiantly improved. But sciatic nerve is still inflamed. My calf strength when doing tip toe slighlty improved after 2 weeks of Physical therapy but calf weakness is still there. I had a new MRI and shows inflamed S1 nerve root. My MRI shows also small focal disc extrustion mildly indenting the thecal sac and right (s1 nerve root) that was originally there prior surgery. My doctor mainly decompressed my L5 nerve which was symptomatic prior surgery. My worry is if I will recover with my calf weakness with my new MRI. I can walk fine, but I have difficulty going up the stairs.

I would to ask the meaning of mild indentation of the right s1 nerve root and the meaning of abutment.

    Thanks

in reply to: Symptom question #27582

I am 3 weeks post laminectomy/discectomy of L5-S1. after 1 week post-op I developed dull pain on my buttocks down to my calf. Pain is around 1-2 in the whole day and gets worst in the evening 4-5 pain scale, This week I feel pain on my groin about 1-2 pain scale. My surgeon told me to be patient and do physiotherapy for 2 weeks then he will re-assess. Taking pregabalin 150mg twice a day and celecoxib 200mg twice a day. Immediately post-op I developed numbness on my 2-5th small toes and side of my sole (s1 nerve? I guess). But it is seemingly decreased, but is still there, I have slight weakness during toe raises as per my rehab doctor. My only concern is my pain on my buttocks and calf (which if pressed is very painful). My calf is also cramping. Is this still inflamed nerves post surgery?

Just a follow-up question, My leg pain usually starts on my buttocks down to my calf, this is happening 9 days, with different varrying pain scale a day, sometimes its 1-2 only on none, sometimes it is 4-5 and the last day it is 6 (just once), startef oral steriod for two days and it seems to help with the pain. I informed my surgeon and he doesn’t even alarmed with it, since I am just 2-3 weeks post-op. Do I need another MRI? When I am not in pain I can walk without ease. My leg weakness started after surgery. According to my rehsb doctor I have slight difficulty duting toe raise.

    Thanks.
