How many years do you anticipate the research will take?

I’ve asked a few practicing neurosurgeons with whom I’ve had consultations about the bio-engineering advancements being made for lumbar discs and not a one of them has indicated they are aware of such advancements under way. What is the best resource for me to stay current on the topic?

How many stages are there in the research and trial phases of such patented inventions? What is the expected timeline of the stages, and how/where could I keep up-to-date on the status of the research and trials?

Do you mind me asking how long down the road you are expecting to either enter FDA trials for the biological disc replacement or when the replacement can be expected to be fully functional in humans? A rough guesstimate would be appreciated, if possible.

I have been told by a chiropractor to take the Disc-Gard supplement; is that advisable? Or is it also not effective because of the lack of blood supply to the discs?

If artificial discs are not recommended for the lumbar spine, what is the current optimal treatment for severe DDD, stenosis, and vertebral arthritis in the lumbar spine?

Do you know anything about the bio-engineered discs that have been developed at the University of Pennsylvania?

Again, I highly appreciate your expertise!

    Dr. Corenman,

Thank you for the information! It is extremely helpful. Do you have any experience with stem cell injections into the discs? Do you have any information for me on artificial discs? Balanced Back is one product I’ve been curious about. Is there absolutely no way for a disc to improve once damaged?

    Best Regards,

I do not quite understand the limited benefits of the DRX 9000; would you please elaborate? My understanding is that by creating a vacuum environment, the discs can heal. I’ve tried to search for “before and after” MRI images, and some I thought I found (in my unprofessional opinion) noticeable/remarkable results. Is traction with any other machine or technique effective?

I was diagnosed at around 10 or 13 years old with cerebral palsy. Most recently, various doctors have suspected I could have hereditary spastic paraplegia or dopamine responsive dystonia. I’ve had genetic testing done for HSP which came back negative (I understand that doesn’t rule HSP out). Officially, there has been no diagnosis other than the early one of cerebral palsy.

I recently read about surgery for clonus. Is that highly disruptive to the body systems?

    I highly appreciate your time!
