in reply to: Herniation of L4 L5 and L5 S1 #11608
I regained full movement in my toes and was able to walk on the balls of my feet about 4 weeks post surgery. However about 6 weeks post surgery I started losing movement in my toes and I have developed horrible pain in my hips. My gluteus medius hasn’t turned back on and my tibialis anterior muscle isn’t really functioning either. I had an updated MRI that showed scarring but no additional herniation. I am now 13 weeks post surgery and really feel like my strength is weakening and my hip pain is intensifying. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am a little frustrated with this!
in reply to: Herniation of L4 L5 and L5 S1 #11355I underwent a microdiscectomy at both levels. They also removed some really thick tissue that was impacting my L5 nerve. Normally after surgery I have heard that the worst position is sitting but by far and away the worst for me is standing and then walking. If I put any weight on my left leg the pain goes through the roof. It has also been really hard to sleep because laying on it aggravates it also.
in reply to: Herniation of L4 L5 and L5 S1 #11350Okay I went ahead and had the surgery. I had varying levels of compression on L4, L5 and S1 but L4 L5 were definitely the worst. I was feeling almost 100% two weeks after surgery however I had a sudden onset of really bad hip pain. The SLR absolutely kills and I can’t walk more than a block without really sharp burning pain. Any idea what this could be? I am wondering if I developed a stress fracture in my hip or if this is just a side effect from the back surgery.
in reply to: Herniation of L4 L5 and L5 S1 #11162I got in to see a neurosurgeon last week. After evaluating all my symptoms he said I could get surgery done. he said that normally the odds are 80-90 percent chance it could work. However because my MRI isn’t showing specific nerve compression the odds are only 50 50. He says if the surgery wouldn’t work then when the herniation occurred it would have scarred the nerves and that just takes time to heal. Also based on the symptoms I am having he would do surgery on the L4 L5 and L5 S1 levels in the form of a microdiscectomy to help return the strength to my leg.
With that being said would you go ahead with surgery or would you continue to do conservative treatment and see if the strength returns in my leg?
in reply to: Herniation of L4 L5 and L5 S1 #11102I couldn’t agree more but every neurologist I have talked to so far says either surgery won’t be helpful or I need to do PT. Hopefully this test will help convince them.
in reply to: Herniation of L4 L5 and L5 S1 #11098I am going in for an EMG on Friday now however I have a question. I am still having significant stomach issues however it is also getting more and more difficult to walk. Every time I take a step with my right side it feels like my knee on the left is getting ready to buckle and I am getting significant burning in the back of my calf. It is progressing to the point of where I don’t think walking more than a block or two is a good idea. Is this common and do you have any idea what could be causing this?
