in reply to: medication after fusion #8630
Thanks. That’s good to know. The reason I had asked that is because the other morning I woke up with a sore neck. It’s been 3 days now and it’s still bothering me.
I went on a vacation with my husband when I was 7 months post fusion (beginning of Feb) and when getting off the trolley cart lost my footing and fell. Face first. Damn flip flops. Anyway, not sure if that would cause any damage to my fusion so long after it was done?
At the time I fell I was fine, no neck symptoms. And I have a plate and screws for fixation.
Maybe I am just having a flare up of some sort. I have done nothing to reinjure myself since that time.
How would one know the difference between a flare and re herniation?
I have pain and stiffness at the base of my neck. Where the big bone is at the base of my neck if that makes any sense.
But it’s not severe excrutiating pain like when I herniated it. It is annoying pain. And there is no radiculopathy extending to my hand either. More like a soreness or stiffness when I turn my head from side to side. I notice that when I turn my head to the right there is a small grinding or clicking noise.
Thank you again for all your time and knowledge Dr Corenman.
in reply to: medication after fusion #8610I notice this hasn’t been answered. Do I have it in the right category?
I have asked my own gp this question and she doesn’t know the effect of spironolactone on bone growth/loss and my neurosurgeon has me refer to my gp at this point.
Thank you.
in reply to: extruded disc #7358Thanks for explaining all that to me. You are a huge help. Have a great day Dr.
in reply to: extruded disc #7352Hi Dr Corenman,
I had my acdf in July and have been doing well. Aa you may or may not remember before my surgery my patellar reflexes were abnormal when checked. Left knee absent right knee hyper. No clonus. It was 10 months ago when they were abnormal.
Every reflex check since then has been normal. Also yesterday I had my reflexes checked again and they were both normal. As well as a normal neurological exam. Checked my legs for weakness and numbness and tingling. All normal this time.
I still haven’t had my lumbar mri as it takes a year to get one here in Canada.
I am somewhat concerned now that my reflexes are normal? And my dr said that if after I get my lumbar mri and that nothing abnormal is found then they will have to investigate further.
What other causes could that have been to cause abnormal reflexes? I have had a cervical mri just before my acdf and that was fine other than the extruded c6/c7.
I know that MS is something that causes abnormal reflexes but I have no other symptoms of that.
Just thought Id geyt your opinion as I still have 2 months to wait for my lumbar mri.
Thanks for your help.
in reply to: back from acdf #6805Thanks so much Dr.
At 5 weeks out my dr cleared me to drive, light activities and physical relations. I have been fine with all of this.
However Friday night I slept wrong and kinked my neck. I have had to take 8mg dilaudid just to take the edge off the pain coming from the back of my neck. No radiculopathy.
Is this flare up something common or could I have done something more serious? I do have a plate and screws.
Thanks.
in reply to: back from acdf #6750Good to know thank you.
I was given limited aftercare instructions after my acdf with internal fixation when released from hospital. Nowhere did it mention not to take ibuprofen in my aftercare booklet.
For the first 2 weeks after my acdf I took 400 mg of ibuprofen 4 times a day.
I have noticed looking at other after care instructions that this is not advised because they say it can lead to a nonunion.
Will this ibuprofen that I took have an affect on my fusion?
And I also have robaxacet. Is this safe to take after fusion?
Thank you.
