Prolotherapy is the injection of a caustic substance into tissue that is designed to cause tissue destruction. The substance injected can be phenol, concentrated sugar or concentrated electrolyte. Tissue destruction (caused by prolotherapy) causes scar formation healing response. The injured tissue will be destroyed and absorbed by the white blood cells and another cell called a myofibroblast will then come in and lay down collagen scar tissue. This new scar contracts to shorten the area.
